Rise of the plus size bridal designer

Today we welcome back Rebecca Lord-Lyon from Edith & Winston Bridalwear! Plus size bridal gowns are proving very popular here in the UK and many more designers are including gowns for the plus size market. Over to Rebecca…

Once upon a time, bridal wear for the Plus Size bride was seen as old-fashioned and frumpy. With too much satin, an excess of ruching, the designs didn’t look like the modern wedding gowns seen each season on the catwalks and in the windows of the bridal boutiques. Left abandoned in a small corner, with a rail that no-one loved, brides were left disheartened by their experiences from the wedding industry.

The Plus Size fashion industry has moved on in leaps and bounds over the past few years, so it was only a matter of time before the bridal industry caught up. With the opening of Plus Size bridal boutiques across the UK, we have seen a subsequent rise in the number of designers finally realising that now is the time to get on board and design for the fuller figured bride. We can’t say “gone are the days of bridal horror stories”, but we hope that with boutiques like Edith & Winston Bridalwear, there will be fewer tales about bridal boutiques squeezing brides into tiny dresses, or worse – the idea that by simply holding up a gown, it can give you an idea of how it would fit. The industry has never really been Plus Size friendly but things are changing!

Edith & Winston Bridalwear opened at the end of 2014 and we have witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of specialist Plus Size collections and designers entering the market, giving the fuller figured bride a wider range of choice than ever before. Specialist designers like Callista and Allure, who have been designing for the Plus Size bride for many years, are releasing stronger and stronger collections every season.

There’s also been an increase in popular bridal brands releasing specialist plus size sister collections for the first time this year. They have worked hard to release collections as well-designed as those by the frontrunners of the Plus Size bridal industry. As well as extending the sizes available in their current collections – giving a Plus Size bride a modern style gown that’s available up to a size 30 – these designs are made with the correct boning and structure, making them perfect for the fuller figured bride.

Unfortunately, like with most things Plus Size, we still have a way to go until we see these designers photographing on a Plus Size model. But it’s great to see how far the Plus Size bridal industry has moved on since I first began working in bridal wear in 2010. But until then we will continue to bring you our own Plus Size bridal inspiration and photo shoots. We hope that the designers realise that we are all loving their designs, and we want to see the gowns photographed on models who better represent the larger sizes.
