A Summertime Country House Wedding in Devon
Congratulations to Mark & Jen who became ‘Mr & Mrs Broughton‘ on 31st May 2014 at a beautiful country house hotel in Devon. The couple met in May 2010 when they were introduced to each-other by mutual friends on a night out in Exeter.
Mark proposed to Jen on Christmas morning (2013) by the Christmas tree in their house. The proposal followed on from a series of sentimental presents, with the ultimate present being a photo album marked “making memories” with a beautiful ring enclosed. It was a complete surprise but a wonderful one!!!
Mark and Jen wanted a wedding that was true to them without spending the earth, so when they started looking at venues they looked for somewhere they felt comfortable and relaxed and that reflected their personalities. They chose East Devon so that all family and friends could join, they wanted somewhere with accommodation so that people could have the option to stay too.
“We live in Sidmouth ourselves so wanted to bring a seaside feel to our wedding. We chose Deer Park as it offered all that we wanted, beautiful countryside, space for all our family and friends, a gorgeous marquee to decorate and personalise and a wonderful relaxed and welcoming feel.”
When it came to planning the big day Mark & Jen had no set plan (but still somehow managed to pull it together in just over 5 months). They both went in with an open mind and listened to suggestions from their suppliers and used Google (a lot), Ebay & Pinterest for ideas.
So we caught up with Mark and Jen to find out all about their day.
Did you have any surprises for each other, or for your guests on your wedding day?
On the morning of the wedding I got ready at home, whilst Mark, family and friends set up the marquee with all the decorations. I had a bit of a “don’t tell the bride” moment, when he walked me in on my own to see the Marquee for the first time before all of our guests. It was beautiful!
The whole day was a surprise for us and our guests as we did not give much away beforehand. The Deer Park went above and beyond our expectations to make it a magical day!
What were your favourite parts of your wedding day (or perhaps most memorable)?
I can’t really pinpoint one, as the whole day was perfect! but here are a few of the highlights! Walking down the isle with my dad to Mark. The ceremony, it was truly memorable, the registrars were brilliant! Photos with Mark around the grounds in the afternoon sun!
Wedding breakfast, The food was unbelievable!
Waking up in the Forget me not room on the morning after the wedding and looking across at the grounds in the morning sun! Bliss!
What would your top tips be for somebody planning their wedding?
Stay calm, stay true to yourselves and personalities, go with your heart and gut reaction when making decisions, Most of all just enjoy the experience and keep smiling!
Carefully chose your photographer! As the day will go so quickly, you will want loads of photos to re live your wedding day time and time again for years to come.
