Two registered charities, The National Railway Museum in York and Oxfam collaborated for a stunning photo shoot, showcasing the wedding gowns available at Oxfam’s high street charity shops.
The initiative came from local wedding photographer Matthew Kitchen, who was inspired to raise awareness of the wide range of beautiful dresses on sale at Oxfam, which included lace-trimmed, classic, and embellished designs, most in pristine condition.
“I discovered the wedding dresses at the Oxfam shop one afternoon, and was astounded at the variety that was available”, says Matthew, “I absolutely adore shooting on location, finding brand new places to photograph and experimenting with new ideas has pushed my work on immensely. When I saw the collection, I knew that I had to show it off and the National Railway Museum was the perfect venue.”
Officially registered as a wedding venue, the National Railway Museum’s galleries, Station Hall and The Great Hall were chosen to provide an historic setting for the photo shoot as they complimented the vintage style of the stunning dresses available.
Chris Hall, deputy manager of the Oxfam Shop York that supplied the gowns, says: “We were really impressed with the beautiful pictures that Matthew produced, which will help raise awareness of the stunning range of new and used wedding dresses that we sell, both in store and online. Not only can customers buy the wedding dress of their dreams for much less than expected, but they are helping to support Oxfam’s wonderful work campaigning to alleviate world poverty.”
Sam Owen, head of commercial and live events at Science Museum Group, which the National Railway Museum is a part of, adds: “As a charity ourselves, we were very keen to lend our support to such a great project by providing the museum as a location for the shoot. The unique and picturesque galleries at the National Railway Museum compliment the fantastic collection perfectly, and will provide an exciting setting to show what Oxfam has to offer.”
