This winter wedding from New Jersey is full of warm colours, love, and happiness! Bridget and Steve are high school sweethearts and have been together many years. They have been waiting for this special day for a long time!
Bridget and Steve married at The Carriage House in January 2015. Thank you to Lauren from Bokeh Love Photography for sharing this beautiful wedding with us! We hope you enjoy it and get plenty of inspiration for a winter wedding.
Tell us your love story
“The first time that Steve asked me to marry him was through a text message. At the time I thought it was perfect; partly because I had asked him on a date through a text message a few months earlier… But mostly because we were 16. We knew we had something special and never really looked back. So I guess you could call us high school sweethearts.”
“The real proposal came on my 25th birthday as a huge surprise. I had a horrible night at work (as a NICU nurse) and he went into work late to make me breakfast. Later we went to dinner and came home to watch one of my favorite movies. It was a nice quiet night at home with all things special to me. He finally said he had one more present for me. He called it “the last rose I will ever give you as your boyfriend.” The ring was tied onto it.”
How did you arrange your wedding?
“We planned the wedding together. Steve had a lot more opinions than I thought he would! We knew we wanted red roses because it is the only flower Steve had ever given me in almost 10 years together. Steve picked all of the music and even “dedicated” all of the cocktail hour songs to me by picking songs that meant something to us or that described how he felt about me.”
What did you both wear?
“Steve wore a black tux with a white vest, white shirt, and red tie from Men’s Warehouse.”
“I wore a Justin Alexander gown, and it was stunning. I took my mom, my best friend and a cousin shopping with me. I had asked my cousin to be in my bridal party that day, but never really expected to pick a dress. I was all over the place with what I wanted. The saleswoman was trying to get me to put my top choice back on when another bride came out in THE dress. In the dressing room, she asked what was wrong because I wasn’t excited about my top choice anymore. I told her that I wanted to try the other bride’s dress on. She was able to get it. As she was doing up the buttons in the back she was telling me all about the designer and I couldn’t hear a word, I was already crying. When I came out my Mom started crying and it was over. We knew it was my dress.”
What venue did you choose?
“We had our ceremony and reception at the Carriage House in Galloway, NJ. I had done a lot of research online and gone to a few wedding shows. The Carriage House was the first venue tour we went on and we left knowing that was where we would get married. It felt grand but not over the top, we were comfortable there. I am so glad we choose them – from planning and prep to the wedding itself the staff were exquisite. We had a secular ceremony with a traditional Celtic hand binding and an exchanging of the rings. We pieced together the ceremony script from a lot of different influences and tied it all together with our own stylistic spin in order to make it our own. It was simple but very meaningful and representative of us. Everything culminated with Steve literally sweeping me off my feet for our first kiss as a married couple.”
Was the day how you imagined?
“I wish the day hadn’t gone by so quickly! Everything went smoothly (partly because my best friend/maid of honor Jillian made sure I didn’t find out about any mishaps until after).”
“One funny moment that I remember was before the ceremony I had asked Steve (this was after our first look) to get Lauren because I wanted to get some pictures of me and my bridesmaid’s shoes or something. So after a few minutes, in walked my very confused cousin Loren.”
“I wish I had stayed more organized throughout the planning. I started great – I had a binder and tabs for different vendors and such, but as time went on I got a bit lazy. I ended up forgetting a custom hanger for my wedding dress pictures and music for the girls while we were getting ready. It was all small stuff though so no big deal! I think the only BIG thing I would change was allowing more time for photography.”
What advice would you give to other couples?
“Enjoy every step of the way! Wedding planning is a great bonding experience and the day is so much fun. Make sure your wedding is representative of you- it will make the day feel all the more fitting as you transcend into the next phase of your relationship.”
Where did you go on your honeymoon?
“We went on a Caribbean cruise to Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel. We really just wanted a trip that we could have fun on but still relax. We got to go zip lining, swam with stingrays, and explored a cave, but didn’t have to stress about where to eat at the end of the day.”
