Venues in the countryside are perfect for both summer outdoor weddings and intimate winter weddings. They’re an ideal destination to get out of the city for a wonderful wedding in the countryside. We’ve had the pleasure to visit hundreds of venues over the years and we always discover a new venue to fall in love with!
We’ve rounded up some of our favourite countryside venues in the UK. These have been featured in various issues of Ultimate Wedding Magazine UK and think they’re ideal for weddings whatever the season! Enjoy!
Dunkery Beacon House, Somerset
Built originally around 1900 as a hunting lodge, the Exmoor-based Dunkery Beacon Country House is now a 21st-century award-winning hotel that caters for highly fashionable bijou weddings that involve the party taking over the whole establishment.
Dunkery Beacon offers small intimate weddings for a maximum of 16 people with accommodation and dining. For this number, the wedding party would have exclusive use of the house and award-winning Coleridge restaurant. There is a quaint church in the village just a few minutes’ walk away, which is perfect for wedding ceremonies and pre and post wedding photos can be taken in the hotel’s lush grounds.
There are fewer areas in Britain where you can get a mash-up of wild moorland with lush, deep, river-made, wooded valleys, dotted with pretty thatched cottages, and acres of woodland. It also has a stunning coastline of great cliffs, the highest in England, and beaches and bays reaching out to the Bristol Channel.
Knowsley Hall, Merseyside
Knowsley Hall is a stunning private walled estate which lends itself perfectly for a country wedding. As you drive up through the main gets, you’ll be mesmerised by the size and beauty of the grounds, manicured garden and lake.
Stucco Ballroom is the perfect location to host your ceremony and exchange your vows. This majestic room exudes romance with its gold-encrusted leaf craftsmanship and original fireplace. Enjoy reception drinks and canapés on the terrace overlooking the stunning grounds. The vast outdoor space allows you to capture many different and dramatic backdrops for your wedding photographs.
Once you are ready to sit down for your wedding breakfast, you will be welcomed into the magnificent State Dining Room through the huge solid oak doors as Mr & Mrs. Your guests will dine on a sumptuous menu and tasted and approved by The Earl and Countess of Derby themselves – planned by you in collaboration with our team of expert chefs and created with ingredients sourced fresh where possible from the Knowsley Estate.
Pengenna Manor, Cornwall
For a memorable countryside wedding, Pengenna Manor is for you! Located in a secluded valley just three miles inland from the North Cornish coast lies this 800-year-old manor. Set in over 300 acres of beautiful Cornish countryside, this venue is exclusive use and available throughout the year.
Choose to tie the knot in one of three gorgeous locations indoors or outside, then celebrate with your guests in the beautiful grounds. For your wedding breakfast and evening party, the purpose-designed marquee garden is perfect. This allows you to hire any kind of marquee you like to suit your style.
The manor features a beautiful Art Deco style Bridal Suite with luxurious en-suite shower room to spend your first night as newlyweds together. Three more beautifully restored bedrooms are available for guests. For the rest of your guests, there are many accommodation options nearby, or they could camp in the grounds itself.
Tylney Hall, Hampshire
Tylney Hall Hotel & Gardens in Hampshire provides the perfect combination of countryside charm and historic splendour. Sitting within over 65 acres of beautifully manicured and lovingly restored gardens, the 19th-century mansion house hotel oozes pure sophistication and elegance.
The secluded countryside hotel boasts four venues licensed for civil ceremonies for 20 to 120 guests, including the stunning stone gazebos in the Italian Gardens, the beautiful Baronial Tylney Suite and the two-floor Hampshire Suite, complete with its own private gardens.
Tylney Hall also offers wedding parties luxurious accommodation in the mansion house and countryside and garden bedrooms. For the ultimate indulgence, you can book the opulent Duke or Duchess honeymoon suites to end your big day in the perfect surroundings.
Wasing Park, Berkshire
A spectacular barn wedding venue set in picturesque Berkshire countryside, the Grade II listed Wasing Park offers a collection of historical buildings in an idyllic setting.
Ceremonies take place in the elegant Garden Room or outside in the Victorian Summerhouse. For a religious ceremony, the picturesque 15th-century parish Church of St Nicolas sits within the grounds of the Wasing Estate.
The magnificent Castle Barn with its grand arches and crenellated stone walls sets the scene for your wedding reception. Traditional features such as exposed brick walls and impressive oak beams blend with modern Italian mood lighting, offering a blank canvas for couples to add their own style.
Talented chefs use the finest locally-sourced ingredients to create fine dining menus and street food feasts alike, there is even venison from Wasing itself.
Alongside the venue is Wasing Estate’s boutique guest accommodation, boasting 26 bedrooms including the fabulous Honeymoon Suite, named in the top 10 honeymoon suites from around the world.
Clevedon Hall, Somerset
Exclusive events venue Clevedon Hall, in North Somerset, has continued to cement its status as one of the UK’s top luxury hospitality venues since re-opening last year following an exciting three-year refurbishment.
The former girls’ school, which was most recently used as business headquarters, underwent a £3m transformation to restore the 150-year-old mansion to its former glory, complete with 25 double bedrooms and suites, each individually designed in the style of an English country house.
Clevedon Hall offers everything from weddings to conferences and prides itself on creating a completely unique event for each client. Available to hire out on an exclusive basis, their concierge can help organise décor, music, food, drinks and much more.
Earlier this year, Clevedon Hall also appointed award-winning chef Alan Jones as the venue’s new head chef. Alan has worked with some of the country’s top Michelin-starred culinarians and aims to make the venue one of the best in the South West.
Elmore Court, Gloucestershire
Elmore Court is a wonderfully welcoming Grade II* listed property, set in the sleepy village of Elmore in the heart of Gloucestershire – surrounded by 1000 acres of peaceful countryside.
The current owners have taken their past experience in the events industry to turn Elmore into a country wedding venue with a modern twist. Four stunning reception areas combine traditional design with contemporary updates – think carved wooden furniture and regal tapestries alongside state of the art sound and lighting systems – whilst eight en-suite bedrooms provide a truly romantic feel with uber-luxurious touches including a freestanding copper bath, a 350-year-old four-poster bed and a large oak-clad bridal suite.
Built with ‘Rammed’ Earth from the surrounding fields, timber floors from estate woodlands and a natural meadow roof, the newly-built ‘Gillyflower’ offers an eco-friendly take on a traditional ballroom, complete with impeccable decor. A state-of-the-art circular sound system keeps music contained within the dance-floor so that non-dancers can still converse with ease. Outside, a decking leads to a cosy fire-pit and a meadow for camping.
Glemham Hall, Suffolk
At long last, we’ve finally found English Country Garden perfection and it comes in the shape of the vast, wide lawns and traditional rose gardens at the beautiful Glemham Hall, near Woodbridge in Suffolk.
This Grade 1 listed family home is full of curiosity and wonder, it is charming and offers a real sense of the quintessential English country home.
Ceremonies can take place in the very elegant Grand Hall or if you like the idea of an outdoor wedding, you’ll feel like you’ve found your own secret paradise when you choose to say ‘I do’ amongst the lavender and roses in their garden venue, the Summerhouse.
Up to 150 guests can be seated in the permanent marquee, which is furnished with ivory linings and glass chandeliers, a classic and timeless style for you to embellish as you wish.
The setting is truly stunning and with outdoor weddings becoming a big trend, you’d be foolish to not make the most of this unique, historical garden. Glemham makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time and it’s entirely yours for your special day.
Low House, Cumbria
Low House, near Armathwaite in Cumbria, is a Georgian Country House set in its own gardens and grounds overlooking the River Eden with stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
The venue is fully licensed for civil ceremonies and civil partnerships with the option of ceremonies taking place either inside the house or outside in the garden; there is the choice of 3 rooms in the house, 1 in the annexe or 2 purpose-built gazebos. Ultimately, guest numbers will dictate which location will be preferable and whether the wedding reception can take place inside the house or outside in a marquee, tipi or giant yurt and there are 2 lawns suitable for this.
Each wedding party is offered exclusive use of the venue with the ability and opportunity to plan their day to their individual requirements as well as creating a bespoke menu for canapés, the wedding breakfast and evening snack or buffet, if required.
The venue owners are happy to provide as much help, information and guidance as each wedding party would like and can provide the services of a wedding planner, if required.
The Manor Country House Hotel, Oxfordshire
Set in an ancient 11th-century manor in the landscaped grounds of a former abbey, this elegant country house hotel sits at the edge of Weston-on-the-Green village, just outside Oxford.
With a wealth of experience, the dedicated Wedding team will ensure that the planning of your special day will be an easy and enjoyable journey.
The Manor’s buildings and grounds offer a range of options for the perfect wedding celebration, from an intimate family gathering to a grand event. The Manor offers dining in a range of rooms, including our historic panelled Baron’s Hall with Minstrel’s Gallery, The Morning Room and The Tudor Room.
They can arrange elaborate parties in the Osborn Suite or a larger gathering in a Marquee. For outdoor weddings, the private Knot Garden is licensed, offering the perfect backdrop to the exchange of vows in the presence of up to 120 of your friends and family.
Washingborough Hall, Lincolnshire
Washingborough Hall, on the outskirts of Lincoln is a gem of a venue, small yet perfectly proportioned, with elegant Georgian symmetry and effortless taste – perfect for an English country wedding.
Its idyllic setting, only a bouquet’s thrown from the neighbouring parish church via a secret garden gateway, will suit traditionalists; or civil ceremony options include the beautiful orangery-style ‘Winston Room’.
Every wedding here is exclusive use. As the hotel has only 11 bedrooms, some guests may need to stay close by. Three bedrooms are suites – with two boasting four-poster beds, so couples are spoilt for choice!
Outdoors in the walled gardens, white doves nest in their cote and the manicured lawns, swathes of English lavender and a decorative teak Pavilion are photographic heaven and best of all are the charming staff!
Eynsham Hall, Oxfordshire
Eynsham Hall is a Grade II listed mansion, nestled amongst 3000 acres of Oxfordshire’s finest rolling parkland. The driveway takes guests through a canopy of overhanging trees and offers a magnificent preview of the Hall in all its splendour. The impressive forecourt is reserved for the wedding party.
Ivy tumbles down the sides of the hall, and the terrace at the back of the manor can host ceremonies or receptions in the warmer months. The terrace boasts a backdrop of mature trees, manicured topiary, formal gardens, ponds and fountains.
In the winter, the grounds look eerily magical in the frost and snow, and in the Spring, Summer and Autumn, the venue is vibrant and full of colour.
For your ceremony and reception, choose between the cosy library, intimate red room, or grand Green room. Maximum capacity for receptions is 250 guests.
Stately, but not stuffy, Eynsham Hall has preserved a traditional country house atmosphere, with modern touches and comforts, and impeccable service.
Cannizaro House, London
