Spotlight: La Belle Cake Company

When we started Ultimate Wedding Magazine in 2011, we didn’t realise how many genuinely lovely people we would meet in the wedding industry. Michelle Shulman is one of these lovely people we’ve known for years! Her cake creations have always been inspirational and beautiful. We’ve very excited to welcome La Belle Cake Company to the Ultimate Wedding Collective. We took a few moments out to ask Michelle a bit more about her company…

Who are you, and what do you do?

Michelle: I am Michelle Shulman, owner of La Belle Cake Company. We make luxury, award winning wedding cakes. I know this sounds like a cliché but I do it because I love it. I love weddings and being involved in just a small part of the biggest day of someone’s life’s makes me happy.

What makes you unique? How do you stand out from the crowd?

At La Belle, all our cakes feature exclusively 100% edible decoration. No ribbons, no plastic decorations – everything that adorns our cakes are hand made and hand piped with love. After all, it’s your wedding day – you deserve nothing less!

When did you start your Company?

I started the company from my small home kitchen back in 2006. Back then we were called Cakes by Shelly. As the company grew, we took on premises and rebranded to La Belle Cake Company to become the luxury brand we are today.

What inspires you? Who in the industry do you look up to?

I am inspired by other successful women in the wedding industry. People like Kat Williams, Ami Bone, Tracy Butterfield and Tina Reading for example. People that have grabbed opportunities with both hands, despite any risk and just run with it.

Do you let trends influence the products you stock/ service your provide?

I find that wedding cakes are mainly influenced by colour trends. While fundamentally designs remain the same simply changing the colours of the decoration can change the look of a whole cake and bring it ‘on trend’.

What is your greatest achievement to date?

My greatest achievement is any time a thank you card drops through my letterbox or an email drops in my inbox. At the end of the day, I provide a service that people have paid to receive so to know that people were so pleased with what I have done they take time out of their day to say thank you – that’s the real achievement.

What do you see as the future of your Company?

The future is bright for La Belle Cake Co. We have some great things in the pipeline – watch this space…

What else can you tell us about you?

As well as running an ever growing company I have a husband, two teenagers and three (yes three!!) dogs. I am a huge Take That fan and they were actually my first celebrity cake commission. Oh, and I failed art at school – guess I never hand the right medium to work with 😉
