Nestled in the rolling Devon countryside sits Huntsham Court, a grand Baronial mansion. Ideally situated a 12-minute drive from Tiverton Parkway mainline railway station, it’s easily accessible from London. It’s also a short distance from Exeter, Taunton and Bristol, meaning this house is a great location for a wedding!

Huntsham Court was originally completed in 1869 as a private mansion for the Acland Troyte family, it was the centre of a 5,000-acre estate. The house was designed by renowned architect, William Burges.

Since 2012, the mansion has undergone extensive renovation throughout the entire property. The current owners, Christopher Badham and Damian Llambias have been working hard to lovingly restore its unique history and character.

Accommodation

As Huntsham Court is more of a home than a hotel, the rooms have a totally different feel of what we’re used to reviewing here at Ultimate Wedding. We stayed in the room “Peanut” which was on the second floor high up in the roof. The room was practically a suite, it was huge! The room features a large main room with sofa, dressing table and two large beds (convertible into one large) with a modern bathroom, but in-keeping with the style.

On the first day of our visit, we had a tour of the house to discover all the rooms and reception areas. There are 35 bedrooms accommodating 82 guests spread across all floors, all of which have a different style to them. One includes two free-standing baths next to each other, perfect as the honeymoon suite! The views from each room were as you expect, beautiful. Most of these overlooked the beautiful grounds surrounding the house.

With so many rooms on offer, you can have plenty of your family and friends stay at the house during your wedding. Available to you and your guests all day and all night is the Pantry. It has a fridge fully stocked and shelves either side full of snacks, treats and drinks. The ideal place to visit for a late-night snack.

Weddings

Weddings and Huntsham Court go hand in hand. This can’t be a better venue to host your wedding! Weddings are hosted exclusive use only and there’s never two back to back. This is your home away from home for the duration of your stay. With 35 bedrooms, your nearest and dearest can stay after the big day.

Outdoor ceremonies are the most popular at Huntsham Court. The gardens are ideal for this purpose. Imagine walking down the path with your guests sitting side by side, before saying “I do” to your loved one under the Old Dovecot in the gardens. You’ll love the little views of the countryside dotted around between the trees. For days that are a little bit dreary, you can get married in The Great Hall, the Library, Drawing Room or Diamond Room.

After the ceremony, head inside to one of 5 reception rooms. These spaces can seat from 50 to 120 guests. New to the Library this summer is the addition of double doors which open out onto the patio. This is great for guests to easily move in and out of the house during the celebrations. With so much outdoor space around the house, it makes the perfect place for relaxing with a glass of bubbly overlooking the rolling fields.

What we love about Huntsham Court is that you can customise your wedding and stay completely. For example, the mansion is self-catering but you can bring in caterers for dinners, breakfasts, lunches and of course the wedding breakfast itself. The team at Huntsham Court can help organise this for you if you like. To keep your guests happy with bubbles and other alcoholic beverages, you can choose to stock the bar yourself with absolutely no corkage fees. Cheers to that!

Activities

Upon arrival to Tiverton Parkway, we were chauffeured in a convoy of luxury Land Rovers. This really set the mood for a luxury weekend in the countryside! After the short drive down windy country lanes, we arrived at the mansion and were treated to delicious pizza from a beautiful converted Citroen H van. The pizza was incredible! All handmade in a wood fired oven right outside the entrance to the mansion. This is a brilliant idea for wedding guests the night before or evening of a wedding!

Each morning we headed down to the pantry to start the day with a huge choice of breakfast options. From cereal and bakery goods to cooked breakfasts made to order. If we did get peckish throughout the day, the pantry was fully stocked with snacks and drinks.

Activities are what makes the mansion come to life. During our stay, we had a lesson in archery and pistol shooting. Many other activities can take place in the grounds including tennis, croquet, football, fencing and more. These activities are great fun at weddings!

Our stay also coincided with a Black Tie Casino evening, with entertainment, food and drink. This event was in aid of Save The Children and many with local residents and businesses attended. Chatting with the guests, you really get a vibe of how much they adore Huntsham Court and what a great asset it is to the local area.

After a lovely weekend at Huntsham Court, we really did not want to leave! This mansion felt like home and without a doubt, will definitely visit again. If you’re seeking a unique exclusive use wedding venue which doesn’t feel like a corporate hotel chain, Huntsham Court is the one for you. This is a hidden gem you don’t want to miss! We recommend taking a trip to Devon and discover this gorgeous venue.
