We wake up and slide our glass balcony doors open, a rush of invigorating sea air greets us. Every room at The Scarlet overlooks the marigold sands of Mawgan Porth and to ensure there are no intrusions on those captivating sea views, wild grasses and flowers are used rather than fences to divide the rooms’ private gardens.
The adult-only hotel sits above the crescent cove on the north Cornish coast and is possibly best known for its award-winning Ayurvedic oceanfront spa. While many hotels may claim to be eco friendly, this is one of the few luxury boltholes that makes good on its promise. Everything is designed in harmony with the environment and you can physically feel the stress ease from your body as soon as you arrive. Stunning gargantuan windows bring the outside in, while glass corridors and picture windows further cement the connection with those breathtaking sea views. Staff seem to glide around silently; pods hang from the relaxation room ceiling ready to rock you to slumber; the choice of luxuriant, soft chaise longues and loungers at floor level is blissfully mind-boggling and the waves striking the beach below become the soundtrack to life. If you long for coastal views (and walks – the South West Coastal path trundles right along the doorstep) this is the place for you.
The cool, contemporary bedrooms and suites continue the elementary awareness with extensive use of natural materials and their open-plan design ensures the waves are not just seen from your bed, but also while you’re brushing your teeth in the bedroom.
Couples will adore the numerous private spots where they can relax together in peace and when it comes time for sustenance the restaurant’s alfresco terrace overlooking Mawgan Porth is a celebrated spot on the Cornish dining scene.
With the buildings purposefully low slung and The Scarlet’s flat roofs topped with wild grasses, it’s the perfect place to reconnect with each other and nature. The reed-fringed outdoor pool is open all year round for a spine-tingling dip and boasts some of the best views in the house, while the indoor pool is equally dreamy. For added romance, book one of the two clifftop hot tubs and sip champagne as the sun goes down. The hot tubs are bookable by the hour while the sauna, set atop the cliff as well, has a porthole window overlooking Mawgan Porth and is open to all guests all day long.
While summer brings denim skies (and more guests) we love cosying away in The Scarlet in spring, autumn and even winter – when wild swimming in the outdoor pool is at its most exhilarating and you can cosy away in romantic nooks and head off for blustery walks.
It’s often the small things that sets a hotel apart; local art and sculptures on display; couples seats and sofas coming as standard; a meditation room with a huge choice of guided meditations on the tablet; serenely helpful staff and omnipresent sea views.
There’s even a plethora of complimentary loose leaf teas (or coffee) available, anytime, anywhere around the hotel. The Scarlet eschews in-room tea-making facilities, “we prefer your tea to come piping hot and fresh to you wherever you are,” we are told as we are shown around. Sure enough, my zingy lemon tea is ferried to one of the coastal canopied daybeds, set among the wild flowers on the hillside for ultimate privacy, later that day.
The Scarlet is a one-of-a-kind eco escape, perfect for those with a lust for sweeping Cornish views a penchant for stylish interiors and luxury spas.
