Whether you’re an amateur in the kitchen or a culinary expert, you can never say no to brand new kitchen tech. With so many different pieces of tech hitting the market these days from smart fridges to ovens with cameras, sometimes it’s the most simple ideas that are incredibly useful.
The team at Salter very kindly sent the brand new Connected Kitchen Scales and Thermometer for me to try out. These innovative scales easily connect to your smartphone or tablet using Bluetooth 4.0 which works with the Salter Cook app. I know what you’re thinking, why do scales need to connect to your phone? Trust me, once you use this you won’t want to cook without it!
Once you’ve got the Salter Cook app installed on your device, it comes preinstalled with recipes for you to follow. What I love most is that you can easily import recipes from other websites such as BBC Good Food (my go-to place for recipes). Within a few taps, the recipe I have open in my web browser is imported into the app. This includes step-by-step instructions, ingredients and thumbnail image.
Using the scales alongside the app is extremely easy. Simply tap on the ingredient weight you need to add, start adding the ingredients and as soon as you reach the desired weight, the app will beep letting you know. Tap the “Zero” button to reset the scales and add the next ingredient – no need for multiple bowls.
The scale looks modern with its white glass top and grey sides. It features a large digital backlit screen, perfect if you want to use it without the addition of the app, but why would you? The units can easily be changed on the scales and also has an aquatronic function for measuring liquids in ml or fl.oz.
The Connected Thermometer is extremely handy to use alongside the scales. If your recipe requires your oven to be at a set temperature, pop the oven probe inside the oven with the Bluetooth transmitter stuck to the outside of your oven with magnets. Tap the oven temperature in the recipe and it will set that temperature as the target. As soon as the oven reaches that temperature, the app will beep to let you know.
Alongside the handy oven probe is a temperature probe on a spike. This is ideal for checking the temperature of meat, confectionery, jam and also ideal for the BBQ. After previously making jam without a temperature thermometer (not a good idea), I cannot live without this!
The Salter Cook App itself is a life-saver when it comes to using it on a regular basis. The ease of importing recipes is the best part, which means whilst I’m in the supermarket I can ensure I’ve got everything I need for a recipe I plan to make. During cooking, it also features a timer. You can have multiple timers set reminding you when to put the next item in the oven etc.
Other little features of the app which are useful include the portion size which changes your ingredients depending on how much you need, the sharing capabilities and star rating. This is an extremely handy tool for the kitchen and I cannot recommend it enough! I’m in the process of going through my cookery books and taking the recipes out to use in the Salter Cook App.
Whether you’re buying this as a gift for a relative, a gift for the couple or even thinking of adding it onto your gift list, I can highly recommend it. You won’t be disappointed!
