Alyn Waterman celebrity makeup artist and hair designer shares his beauty tips for the mother of brides and grooms. Having worked on the feature film The Time of Their Lives with Dame Joan Collins and Pauline Collins, he explains which products work well for the more mature lady.

On the wedding day, your main concern is making sure everything goes smoothly for your son or daughter or new son/daughter-in-law, so your makeup needs to last all day with minimum concerns about retouching. I would always advise having your makeup applied early so you are free to help with the wedding morning.

Skin prep is important. I really like DHC Beauty Lift Cream as an overnight treatment. This way you have a head start for radiant skin in the morning.

Using a primer before your foundation will help make your makeup last longer. Try Urban Decay Brightening and Tightening Complexion Primer, also Stila One Step Correct is an excellent product for evening out redness.

To give your skin a radiant glow under your foundation try Amazing Radiance Cream by Rosie for Autograph. While filming I found that the Joan Collins Timeless Beauty First Base lasted really well in all weathers and kept the skin protected and moisturised. I also recommend Becca Aqua Luminous Perfecting Foundation which gave sheer but beautiful coverage.

Under-eye concealers should be light reflecting and not heavy or cakey. I like to use Bourjois Radiance Reveal Concealer or Joan Collins Timeless Beauty Fade to Perfect Concealer.

When choosing eye shadows, pencils and mascara, look for products that are labelled long-lasting or waterproof. It’s safer to stick to earthy tones for eye shadows. However, it can also be attractive to match your outfit and use navy or lilac as an alternative.

Brows can often lose shape and definition with age. Try brow powders or pomades to shape and define.

Waterproof mascara is also a wise investment and I like Pierre Rene Aqua Sport 100%. Using a white pencil inside your lower lashline can help brighten your eyes. Try MAC Eye Kohl in Fascinating.

Individual eyelashes can open and enhance the eyes. I’ve recently discovered KISS Trios Lashes which come in sets of three lashes and are easy and faster to apply than individual lashes.

To bring natural colour to your cheeks use either cream blush or powder. My favourites are Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheeks.

Long-lasting lipsticks can often feel dry. I like to choose a high pigment gloss like Bourjois Rouge Laque and for a matte finish Pierre Rene Royal Matte Lipstick. If you prefer a softer lip I like DHC Moisture Care Lipstick in Pink Whisper or Clinique Chubby Sticks. Always use a lip liner to achieve the best shape for your lips and to stop lipstick feathering.

Remember to set your makeup well. Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray will help your makeup last throughout the wedding celebrations.
